FAITH COMMUNITY NURSE

The Church of St. Mary, Alexandria, MN, is seeking a Faith Community Nurse.

St. Mary’s, located in Alexandria, MN, is one of the largest parishes in the St. Cloud Diocese with 2100 families and a growing K-6 school with 240+ students.  Alexandria is one of the fastest growing micropolitan communities in the country with an innovative school district and a diverse economic base.  We are located in the heart of Minnesota’s Lakes Area with convenient interstate access to the Twin Cities.

We are willing to be flexible with the regular work schedule and this opportunity could range from 30 – 40+ hours per week, depending on the candidate’s interests.

The primary responsibility of the Faith Community Nurse is to provide intentional care of the spirit while promoting and optimizing wholistic health care (spiritual, physical, mental and social) of the faith community. 

Job Duties:

  1. Provide health counseling & spiritual care through visitation and follow-up in homes, hospitals and long-term care facilities.
  2. Assess the wholistic health of the parish community and develop appropriate programming to address identified needs.
  3. Assess individuals from a wholistic perspective in their homes and within the congregation.
  4. Provides individual health counseling related to health maintenance, disease prevention or illness patterns.
  5. Refer members of the parish & greater community to pastor, physician, or community support services, and serve as liaison, as needed.
  6. Promote an understanding of the relationships between faith and health.
  7. Serve as a parish prayer leader.
  8. Promote healthy lifestyle practices as a matter of stewardship and faith.
  9. Provide health education in the parish and greater community thru parish communications and coordinating and/or presenting health related classes.
  10. Educate on social and/or legislative issues that affect health care.
  11. Advocate for the effective use of health care and social service systems.
  12. Serve as a resource person on health issues to other faith communities or organizations.
  13. Coordinate volunteers to assist in caring for others.
  14. Recruit, train, direct, and evaluate wholistic health care volunteers.
  15. Develop, coordinate, and sustain various support groups.
  16. Assist in coordinated efforts for maintaining institutional safety and security including, safe handling of food for events, emergency preparedness, and injury incident follow-up.
  17. Participate on Staff Leadership Team.
  18. Participate in local Faith Community Nurse network and other health related professional organizations.
  19. Evaluates quality and effectiveness of the parish nursing ministry.
  20. Maintain quality and productivity at highest levels.
  21. Able to work within a team.
  22. Follow safety and good housekeeping practices
  23. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required, BSN preferred.
  • Currently licensed as an RN in the state of Minnesota.
  • Comply with license requirements of 30 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) every 2 years.
  • Minimum of three-years experience required, preferably in one of the following areas: public health, health education, school nursing, medical/surgical nursing.
  • Completion of Faith Community Nurse Preparation Course required within 1 year of employment.
  • Possess knowledge of healthcare assets of the greater community.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Basic level of proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Follows and understands The Code of Ethics for Nurses and Scope and Standards of Parish Nursing Practice.
  • Provides wholistic health education & counseling in the parish and greater community.
  • Manages health ministry volunteer activity.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good organizational skills; time management.
  • Works well independently and as part of a team.
  • Maintain personal liability insurance.
  • Regular and consistent attendance.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional demeanor in all situations.
